When we first heard a portion of her speech we were taken by surprise, however we had to be sure we had heard right. Now Aisha Buhari is not fluent in English and in fact makes many mistakes while speaking that if it had been the first lady social media would have blown up with it. Notwithstanding she was clear on this matter and we as a women organization take offense to it.

“Did the wife to Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, Mrs. Aisha Buhari use a stereotypical term in addressing the people of Edo state while addressing them yesterday.” A comment made by Zenith Oduah of New wire in regards to her statement and we agree.


This is the statement made by Mrs. Aisha Buhari “I am here to let Edo women know that when my husband is elected, insecurity, girl-child trafficking and suffering of widows will end. They don’t need to go and prostitute somewhere to survive.” Really, these are the questions that come to mind.

Where was Mrs. Aisha Buhari when large numbers of individuals all over Nigeria were leaving the country for greener pastures over a decade ago and what did her husband do to empower Nigerians while in office and when he had the chance to do so? While such things are now a thing of the past and more people are being empowered by the current government we are amazed that she will use that as a campaign speech to sell General Muhammadu Buhari for office. After all is this the first time her husband is running for office, and is this not the first time she has ever bothered to come out and speak if not for the prompting of Nigerians women who found their feet under the current government.

Was it not just last year when many young girls where refused entry into Saudi Arabia during the period of Jihad to Mecca, in fact the authority insisted that they must be escorted to prevent them from prostituting in their country has Mrs. Aisha Buhari preached the end of prostitution in those states. Did she comment during the Chibok girls issue then or now, are there no widows where she comes from? Has she visited women in war torn areas where the Boko Haram and the Military has engaged and offered assistance?

We have followed her campaigns and we have never heard this woman address any state she has been to like she did ours. We are not aware of any community service by Mrs. Aisha Buhari except for the drugs worth N137 million recently donated to Imo State which of course is during the campaigns leading to elections.

And like a young man Abdul Mamud said on twitter, “If that remark isn't offensive, stereotypical and crass, nothing is. Defend it as you would want to, every foul language has what is contained within it: disdain, disrespect and disregard. No one has monopoly of abuses. I say no more.”
This was amusing; when her husband is elected insecurity will end, while the Chief Security Officer of the state in the person of Adams Oshiomhole stood by her side.
We expect an apology from her.

No matter how much we try to revision this statement,it will be downright suicidal for us to ignore the fact that,Aisha Buhari,her Husband,her people,her children,her town,state,zones and region hold this UNCOMPLIMENTARY view about our women.
This is one thing I can never forgive Eki Igbinedion for. Before you see one Edo prostitute,you would have seen 30 Ibos,20 TIV/Idoma/Igala, 15 northern minorities,5 yorubas. This is the correct statistic but Eki out of greed branded Edo with the tag and it has become very difficult to remove even when it is against the true reality.

(4) 67% of Fulani women suffer from abdominal and virginal leakages because of adolescent and teen marriages where they were subjected to matrimonial rapes by their selected husbands. This very woman may just be suffering from it,having married a man who is 45 years her senior at the age of 15.adult pampers is a very lucrative business in the north.


(5) A 15 year old child who was sold to an old man by the parents,to me was a customary prostitution arrangement.

(6) Is the daughter of this woman not modeling abroad. Now,I know how that works. Modeling and prostitution are correlative jobs. They are coterminous and go hand in hand.


(7) for those of you abreast with the happenings in Nigeria today,the Fulani herdsmen are the ones killing,robbing and raping host communities. Mrs Buhari should ask her husband to focus taking care of their people first before insulting others.


(8) The almajiri problem which led to Boko haram is the biggest problem today in this country not even prostitution. Who are the almajiris? Aisha should tell us...not you!

Listen up people, if you are a woman, and you left this country to go live in Cotonou, London, Johannessburg, America, Italy, Germany, France, in fact, anywhere at all outside Nigeria, Buhari wife says her hubby, the one and only Oluwole General is about to bring you back from 'prostitution'! Never mind if you worked your black behind off to become a doctor, attorney, engineer, musician, scientist, academician, no. So long as you are a WOMAN, having two breasts and other identities of a woman, and you are OUTSIDE NIGERIA, you are a PROSTITUTE! Good news???? Cry no more, BUHARI is bringing you back from prostitution!

Can this woman shut up already? Can't her husband gag her??? What a wuss! Opening your mouth to call diaspora women prostitutes? And I was thinking the hubby is taking the whole stuff alone!

From frying undone akara to sweeping streets, what else does she have up her sleeves apart from this hate speech? Going by the accounts of the predominance of Edo women in the prostitution trade, naive consumers of these sensationalized reports tend to be largely misinformed about Edo women. What do the following women have in common? Mrs. Sandra Aguebor-Ekperouh, Nigeria’s first woman mechanic; Prof. Helen Osinowo, the first Professor of Clinical Psychology; Mrs. Mabel Segun, the first woman to play table tennis in Nigeria; Most Rev. Dr. Margaret Benson-Idahosa, Africa’s first female University Chancellor; Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, first African member of the Academic Advisory Group of SEERIL, International Bar Association; Justice Gladys Olotu, repelled oppressive immigration conditions for issuing passports to married women; Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru, first woman head of the Federal Inland Revenue Service; Prof. Helen Asemota, a foremost researcher in the field of molecular biology, biochemistry and Nano technology; Prof. Francisca Oboh-Ikuenobe; a leading geologist, Senator Franca Afegbua; Nigeria’s first female senator; and Miss Anne-Marie Imafidon; worldrecord holder for the youngest girl to pass A-level computing, at age 13. Well, the answer is simple. Unfortunately, the remarkable successes of these women often fail to resonate with the Nigerian public -as their stories and experiences have been subsumed into the prostitution narrative. How have Edo women been stereotyped? With the less than profound narratives of the new age of prostitution involving Nigerian women, the politics of stereotyping ensures that Edo women have become the symbolic representation of what is morally decadent and licentious in post-independence Nigeria. While prostitution is the “oldest” profession in the World and no society is free from it, however, no other group of women anywhere in the World has suffered the prostitution stigma as much as Edo women. In places likeThailand and Amsterdam, known as World centers for prostitution, the average Thai or Dutch woman is never stereotyped as a “prostitute.” The narratives of Edo women in popular culture, newspapers and Nollywood movies have been largely pejorative, with recycled stereotypes of prostitution, greed and lack of education becoming a template for regular regurgitation. The Nigerian media and government agencies often do not talk about the scale of prostitution elsewhere in the country; hence the public has no frame of reference. It is as a result of this pervasive stereotype that a new initiative to profile accomplished Edo women; called Voices of Edo Women was launched To put it simply, prostitution is not an Edo issue, it is a Nigerian problem. Thus, instead of scapegoating Edo women for a problem that has wide and far reaching implications for the Nigerian society, the media, government agencies and other stakeholders should focus on finding sustainable ways to tackle prostitution involving Nigerian women: in Europe, Africa, on University campuses, on street corners in various Nigerian cities and as escorts for randy politicians and philandering men. Every two minutes, somewhere in the world, an underage child is being forced into prostitution, including in all the 36 States of Nigeria and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. *Joan.Osa Oviawe writes from Washington State, USA joanoviawe@gmail.com But, the cold hard fact is that throughout history, Edo women have been achievers, even in the face of odds. Hearing the decidedly parochial and hypocritical discourse on prostitution in Nigeria, one is almost convinced that prostitution is not triggered by socio-economic indicators like poverty, but rather, by genetic and moral defects that are uniquely Edo! Interestingly enough, the media and other social pundits never see it expedient to equally label those who are predominantly involved in 419 scams, credit card frauds, drug trafficking and so on. Why is it that what is good for the goose is not good for the gander? The women are often depicted as uneducated, loquacious and money hungry. In Nollywood movies, anytime a movie character has an Edo name, she is invariably playing the role of a prostitute! Recently, one of the tabloid Newspapers in Nigeria, the Daily Sun, published a report in which the journalist claimed that Benin City is both Nigeria’s “largest sex market” and the “World’s biggest sex market.” Ordinarily, one would have ignored such a shoddy, factually fraudulent and anachronistic piece of yellow journalism. However, if this lies is told often enough, soon it will become fact! This story highlights the reality of the contemporary Edo woman in a Nigeria where ethnic chauvinism, jingoism and myopia are the sin qua non for the politics of stereotyping. In writing to the Editor of that tabloid newspaper, I questioned the veracity of the claims made by their journalist and asked how the World’s largest sex market could be in Benin City when the U.S. alone rakes in over $13 billion annually from the adult entertainment industry. Worldwide, the revenue from prostitution and other forms of debauchery tops $57 billion! I wanted to know what percentage of this market has been cornered by the pimps and madams in Benin City to warrant the City being tagged with the dubious honor of “World’s largest sex Market.” Even within Nigeria, Benin City still does not count among the top ten hotspots for prostitution in the Country. Would the journalist have dared tagged any other City in Nigeria “the World’s largest sex market”? I think not. This sort of illogical claim published by Daily Sun further underlines the nature of the politics of stereotyping in Nigeria. This is a serious problem with dire consequences for Nigeria. The prostitution discourse in Nigeria must go beyond simplistic ethnic bashing and should be seriously examined for its social, economic, cultural and public health impact.
